IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders. However, this painful and uncomfortable condition is still too often dismissed by health professionals as something you need to live with. It is not!

If you experience bloating, lower abdominal pain and discomfort, abdominal distension, wind or altered bowel habits ranging from diarrhoea to constipation, you might be suffering from IBS.

As we now know, our digestive issues, if left untreated, can also be the cause of seemingly unrelated issues such as depression and mood swings, fatigue, brain fog, weight gain and weight loss resistance, joint and skin issues.

If you experience any of these issues, I can help you address them and create a treatment plan that will not only reduce the symptoms but also reverse any associated conditions.

Find the cause!

Most common causes of IBS are:

  • gut infections (bacterial infections, parasites)
  • leaky gut syndrome
  • food intolerances/sensitivities
  • poor diet, stress and disordered eating patterns
  • frequent use of “gastro” medications

As with all things related to gut health, these causes are often interlinked and coexisting at the same time, creating the need for the holistic and focused treatment.

Manage your IBS!

To achieve the reduction of IBS related symptoms, I will initially focus my treatment on eliminating any possible gut infections, reducing inflammation and leaky gut and promoting regular eating patterns.

Sometimes further testing will be needed to establish the proper treatment protocol (e.g. Comprehensive Digestive Stool analysis), especially if an infection is suspected.

Dietary management will focus on the Low Fodmaps Diet, which has been found to help control the symptoms in 75% of IBS sufferers.

The Low Fodmaps diet is performed in two phases, a restriction phase, when dietary sugars (FODMAPs) are avoided and a reintroduction phase, where those sugars are systematically reintroduced back into the diet.

During this time, I will support you through the two stages of the diet with shopping lists, meal plans and recipes to make sure that you maintain high energy levels as well as healthy bacterial population of the gut.  I will also guide you towards whole foods and mindful eating as I have seen in practice how effective the combination of the two is, not only for reducing the IBS symptoms but also is for reducing your stress levels, which further contribute to IBS.
