SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth occurs when bacteria, normally present in the large intestine spreads in the small intestine where it starts fermenting and causing digestive issues.

If SIBO is left untreated, it can damage the absorptive surface of small intestine and depletes the body of nutrients. SIBO most commonly manifests itself with bloating, burping, flatulence, pain (cramping), fatigue and constipation (more common than diarrhoea). The symptoms usually worsen when eating sugary or starchy foods and fibre.

SIBO has also been linked to have other, non -digestive symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, mood swings, unexplained weight loss and brain fog that coexist at the same time.

If you experience these symptoms it is important to address them before any other health issues may develop as SIBO has now been implicated in the development of some autoimmune conditions as well as mental health issues.

If you believe SIBO might be the cause of your symptoms, I can help you restore the health of your small intestine and achieve a SIBO free life.

Find the cause!

Most common causes of SIBO are:

  • long term medication use that causes reduced secretion of gastric acid
  • chronic stress and compromised immune function
  • digestive disorders such as Crohn’s disease, Coeliac disease, IBS
  • diets high in processed foods, refined carbohydrates and excess sugar.

It is important to understand and manage the cause of SIBO first to be able to successfully heal your gut.

Manage your SIBO!

If SIBO is suspected, I will advise you to undertake a non-invasive functional test to confirm the diagnosis. I will guide you through the testing procedures and if SIBO is confirmed, create a holistic plan that includes diet and lifestyle modifications. The diet will be based on the removal of triggers, which with SIBO are easily fermented carbohydrates.

The SIBO dietary plan is a bi-phasic diet, aimed to eliminate bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine as well as any possible fungal infections. In the first phase my focus will be on reducing fermentable starches and fibres to starve bacteria of their fuel. I will guide you with meal plans and recipes to ensure that you are still getting all the required nutrients. During this stage we will also work on repairing your intestinal lining with gut healing nutrients and targeted probiotics. In the second phase we focus on removing the remaining bacterial overgrowth and restoring the normal motility of the small intestine. We will start reintroducing the easily fermented carbohydrates in a controlled way.

During both phases of the diet I will support you with meal ideas, recipes and lifestyle recommendations to ensure the treatment has as little effect as possible on your daily life.
